In The Standard, Pitchapa considers research, information and social media contents which are reproducing ideologies that convince us that certain set standards are normal and fair. They make us believe that we can actually live in such suppressive conditions that almost drown us. Past research recommends eight to 10 hours of sleep; however, we have now been convinced that four hours of sleep are sufficient for living. In only eight years, the standard size of one-bed living unit has been reduced from 65 to 28 square meters. These are statistical examples which are rapidly changing in such urban living as that of Bangkok. The only number with minor changes over decades is that of minimum wage—an increase of only 31 baht since 2012.

These are some examples of what have been affecting most Thai people’s living. They are resources doled out by the more powerful people, either the state or the capitalist. They are factors which force us into barely livable conditions as we fully dedicate ourselves to our jobs in order to maintain our depressing living. With this work, Pitchapa, a performance artist, experiments on creating a laborer’s living environment with only a few necessities.
