Bangkok Art Biennale 2022 “CHAOS : CALM”: A Therapy For The World

Ahead of the unveiling of Bangkok Art Biennale’s expanded lineup for its 2022 iteration, contributing writer Rémy Jarry sits down with Prof. Dr. Apinan Poshyananda, chief executive and artistic director of BAB, to take a deep dive into how the upcoming edition will pursue its international ambition while relating to the tumultuous conditions of the world.

Titled “CHAOS : CALM, the third edition of the Bangkok Art Biennale (BAB) is slated to take place from 22 October 2022 to 23 February 2023 at six locations across the Thai capital. In addition to the 20 participating artists announced last November, organisers have just announced the name of another 23 participants. Among them, Antony Gormley, Vadim Zakharov, Wendimagegn Belete, Nengi Omuku, and Yee I-Lann will join a rich line-up including Chiharu Shiota, Xu Zhen, Jitish Kallat, Pinaree Sanpitak, Rachel Kneebone, and Jake and Dinos Chapman. The announcement was scheduled in a timely manner just a week following the launch of the publication Anish Kapoor, Cosmos, Void & Motherhood, which recounts Kapoor’s monumental installation and sculptures that were part of the previous biennale. In this interview, we speak to Prof. Dr. Apinan Poshyananda—editor of the book, and chief executive and artistic director of BAB. Sharing his views about the upcoming edition, Poshyananda explains how the art event will pursue its international ambition while expecting a greater political resonance to address the challenges of our times, from global warming to plagues and wars.
