For BAB 2022, Antony Gormley has created site-specific sculptures at the courtyard of Wat Phra Chetuphon Wimonmangkhlaram (Wat Pho, Temple of the Reclining Buddha). Gormley considers his works to be instruments for mindfulness, reflecting his deep interest in Buddhism and Jainism. At Wat Pho, two of the artist’s sculptures stand in their own temple precincts. Connect (2022) presents the body as a zone of emergent connectivity with space and light and Contain (2022) presents the body as the material context of consciousness. Together, they identify the ground of human experience and our relationship to space, mass and energy. The Buddhist teaching of impermanence is echoed in their placement within Sino-Siamese temples, both of which contain rows of Buddha images depicting various mudras.
