Following up on the previous bodies of works where the artist explored the history and culture of militarism in Asia, the mixed-media installation created for BAB reflects on the collective experiences of militarism departing from the Philippines to look, by assonance, to the wider region of Southeast Asia. These experiences range from the militarist lockdowns related to covid, to red-tagging and crackdown on activists, from killings of peasant and indigenous leaders, journalists, lawyers, and rights defenders, to the drug war and the appointment of military officials to government positions. Throughout the works featured in the installation, spanning from wooden puppet and canes to textile and uniform’s decorations valorising the military persona, the work in BAB reflects on the US historical patronage to the armed forces militarism, as well as on the proliferation of fascist regimes and the cultures and norms these regimes inflict to the people such as impunity, fear, misogyny, and entitlement as opposed to values the establishment purports such as honour, service, and loyalty.
