The installation finding one’s shadow in ruins and rubble (2014) includes thirty-one hand crafted mahogany lightboxes framing found images of gutted buildings, debris, and urban wastelands of Syrian cities. With spectral iterations of desolation being portrayed within each box, their formation creates a miniature cityscape bearing witness to war destruction yet still resiliently standing, reminding us to find hope beneath the rubble. Spanning over different geographies, rise into the atmosphere (2022) is a 7.1 immersive sonic landscape that navigates the media-saturated images of ‘conflict zones’ to remember and reimagine the landscapes, cultures, peoples, and dreams for these fractured countries. Working with a group of international musicians including Syrians in exile, Chung interweaves music, poetry, and thoughts in a soundscape that meditates on loss and trauma, while embracing hope and courage that defy the obliterating force of war.
